Rebrand ECQ’s image and website to align with today’s modern voters
View siteThe rebrand
In modernising the Electoral Commission Queensland’s (ECQ) image, a key component of this project was the rebrand of their logo. ECQ felt their previous logo lacked distinction in character and wanted to bring out the meaning of the maroon and their friendly, trustworthy and approachable character. ECQ also wanted to depict Queensland’s strong, diverse and inclusive culture.
The logo represents
Democracy
The individual boxes represent ballot boxes and electorate seats to convey the idea of everyone around Queensland getting a voice in elections, and being a part of the democratic process.
Diversity
The colours and varying shapes of the boxes are a way to show the diversity across Queensland; our different regions, generations, ethnicities, backgrounds, and our different needs and goals.
Sunshine
Starting from the Queensland Government maroon, the colours transition across the boxes to create a sunrise/sunset and to play on our standing as the Sunshine State.
Unity
By bringing the boxes together into the shape of Queensland we show that every person in the state gets a voice, are united and it’s the voice of the people that make Queensland the great state that it is.
The new website experience
Access electorate and division information at ease
Previously, users were directed from ECQ’s website onto an external site such as the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) to find information related to their electoral division. The sense of ownership of information is lost, reduces the amount of time spent on ECQ’s main site and distracts the process of the experience.
To solve this problem, we created a personalised electorate details page that shows users their division details based on their location. Voters can quickly access their electorate information such as their candidates and polling places close to election day. The scene of the banner image also changes depending on the user’s location: city, suburban areas, outback/remote areas, tropical/northern Queensland or islands. It also shows that no matter where you are, you can vote and ECQ is here to help.
“We collaborated and worked closely with the team at Electoral Commission Queensland to design their new logo and website. Our aim was to help ECQ create a new representation and website that would promote awareness of, and participation in, electoral matters.”

Here for you at every stage of the election process
ECQ is Queensland’s largest election event planning and management company and are in charge of major 4 year state elections, predictable elections and by-elections. Therefore the homepage should reflect this and be updated regularly based on the type of election and the stages.
We’ve broken down the website into four stages: outside, before, during and after the election to help users find relevant services and information easily, and quickly depending on the stages of the election.
Educate the importance of voting

Around election time, ECQ receives an increased number of calls regarding their processes, what happens with votes and general FAQ questions.
To help reduce the overload on ECQ’s call centre around election time, we designed new pages to the website around ECQ’s stories, timeline, news and voting process. It serves people the information they require and improves the transparency of the brand and their processes. This educates voters and gives people a chance to know more about the background of ECQ and its history.
Friendly avatars and illustrations
Understanding personas are effective in knowing the users of the site and ensures we are designing to suit the needs of our users. These users are not only voters but includes, candidates and parties members, media and electoral workers.
These personas are also turned into avatars and used as visual and graphical elements across the site. These avatars create a unique and memorable experience that represent ECQ. We also illustrated a number of environments and scenes, icons and infographics to help connect the user and provide the information in a personalised manner.
Improved user experience through testing and refinements
During the design of the website, we went through multiple refinements to makes sure the final result was inline with the new brand, feedback from ECQ staff and user testing results.
We conducted user testing with users matching to the personas defined in the beginning of the design process. The test involves the user completing a number of key user journeys, followed by open ended survey questions and Net Promoter Score (NPS) rating to help give an indication on whether they felt the site was a source of truth and would recommend others to visit. Word associations were also introduced at the end of the test to pick up user attitude towards the design and how they felt about the website.
Based on these results, we were able to improve the information architecture, languages of the content, menu structures and linkages between pages, as well as fix up any breakages between key user flow and journeys.
“The Digital team at GBST were fantastic to work with on this project. They understood our requirements from the very beginning and delivered a beautiful new website and logo which helps us communicate with our audience more effectively.”
